First of all, you need a working system. If you try to come up with something completely new and figure out how to make money with it, your chances of actually generating cash are very, very slim. It’s a lot better to find a system that works, use it, and then incrementally improve it for maximum profitability.

The second element that you need to master is yourself – you need to organize your working time. There is no boss looking over your shoulder, there are no consequences if you take a day off – that’s great, but many people don’t function well under these conditions. That’s why it is important to learn how to manage yourself.

The best thing you can do is to find a process that you can follow step by step, where the final outcome is making money.

For example, think about McDonalds – one of the largest brands in the world. The reason why they are making so much money is not that they make the best hamburgers – they surely don’t. And because they have developed this money-making system pretty much everyone with the necessary funds can open a McDonalds franchise and start making money, even if they have no experience whatsoever in the fast food industry. This is really remarkable – and this is the kind of thing you are looking for. Of course, not a fast-food franchise – you can’t run a McDonalds from your home. But there are many proven systems that show you what you need to do to earn money from home. Nowadays, the best opportunity is really with the internet – even if you have very little computer skills and don’t know much about the internet, you can now make good money working from home with your computer if you just follow the steps.

Being organized

Another  challenge that many people face who want to make money at home is that they only see the positive things: they can work on their own terms. They don’t need to show up at a certain time, put in a certain amount of hours, there’s no dress code, no commute… It’s all so tempting! But there is a real downside to that too. Because it is so easy to just slack off. Watch a bit of TV, instead of doing some boring task. Spend hours on an interesting activity, while there is something that needs to be urgently done. So you need to have self-discipline if you want to be successful when you work at home.

Money Mindset

And finally, you need to get away from the employee mindset of “getting paid by hour”. There is nobody who owns you money when you work from home. You are the one who must create value and get paid for the value you provide. I didn’t pay enough attention to this at first when I started out – and it took me a long time to learn the importance of how I think about time and money. Most people think about money just in terms of wanting more of it, or not having enough of it. But you really do need a different mindset from the one that we learn in school and that we take over from the media.
